Event: Floodings, Extreme Heat and the Right to Health in Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the countries most severely affected by the consequences of global warming. Temperatures above 50°C, severe flooding, scorching heat, and a collapse of medical care have long been part of everyday life for many people. “Uncounted: Invisible deaths of older people and children during climate disasters in Pakistan” documents how increasingly frequent floods and heat waves are overwhelming Pakistan’s underfunded health care system and leading to preventable deaths, especially among young children and older adults.

Pakistan, which accounts for about 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, is the fifth most vulnerable country in the world to climate disasters. In collaboration with the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), a charitable hospital that provides free healthcare in Pakistan, Amnesty International has investigated how often deaths skyrocket after extreme weather events.

“Rising temperatures are leading to increasingly intense and unpredictable weather. Children and older people in Pakistan are on the front lines of the climate crisis, exposed to extreme heat or flooding that leads to disproportionate levels of death and disease,” said Laura Mills, researcher with Amnesty International’s Crisis Response Team.

As part of our event “Fighting on the Frontlines of the Climate Crisis: Floodings, Extreme Heat and the Right to Health in Pakistan,” we will discuss the Amnesty report and the human rights dimensions of the climate crisis in the Global South together with the authors and researchers. Among other things, we will address the health effects of extreme heat and flooding, and the resulting dramatic gap in health care. We will also discuss challenges with data collection in Pakistan and international responsibility in the context of climate justice.

The following experts will be participating:

  • Laura Mills, Amnesty International Crisis Response Team, co-author of the report
  • Dr. Farah Waseem, physician and human rights activist in Pakistan
  • Maazan Mubasher, medical student, climate activist, and workshop leader in Pakistan
  • Anne Stadtmüller, Climate Coordinationn Group, Amnesty International Germany
