Was ist das Problem?
Der Rio Magdalena ist Kolumbiens größter Fluss und Lebensgrundlage für Yuly Velásquez. Seit Generationen ist die tropische Flusslandschaft in der zentralkolumbianischen Region Magdalena Medio Quelle für Trinkwasser, Heimat für Seekühe und Schildkröten, sie ernähren hunderte Fischerfamilien. Nun ist dieses lebensspendende Ökosystem in Gefahr.
Yuly Velásquez ist Fischerin und Präsidentin von FEDEPESAN, einem selbstorganisierten lokalen Zusammenschluss für traditionelle Fischerei, Umweltschutz und Tourismus in Barrancabermeja. Die Organisation berichtet, dass fossile Konzerne durch Raffinerieabfälle und Öllecks das Wasser der Region verschmutzen. Die größte Raffinerie Kolumbiens steht in Barrancabermeja, betrieben vom größten Erdölunternehmen Kolumbiens – der Konzern aber weist jede Verantwortung von sich.
Die Fischer*innen von FEDEPESAN wehren sich und fordern die kolumbianische Regierung seit Jahren auf, die Gewässer und Sümpfe in Magdalena Medio zu schützen: Doch der Staat schaut tatenlos zu – auch wenn Yuly Velásquez und andere Mitglieder wieder und wieder eingeschüchtert, bedroht und angegriffen werden.
Angriffe auf den Klimaschutz sind Angriffe auf die Menschenrechte!
Im globalen Kampf gegen die Zerstörung von Umwelt und Existenzen stehen die Fischer*innen von FEDEPESAN in der ersten Reihe – sie riskieren ihr Leben für den Klimaschutz. In keinem anderen Land müssen dafür so viele Menschen mit ihrem Leben bezahlen wie in Kolumbien.
Für den unerschrockenen Einsatz zum Schutz von Umwelt, Klima und Menschenrechten verleiht die deutsche Sektion von Amnesty International den Menschenrechtspreis 2024 an FEDEPESAN und seine Präsidentin Yuly Velásquez.
Gemeinsam für das Menschenrecht auf eine sichere, saubere, gesunde und nachhaltige Umwelt:
Setze zusammen mit Yuly Velásquez die kolumbianische Regierung unter Druck, die Zerstörung der Ökosysteme in Magdalena Medio zu stoppen und erneute Angriffe auf die Mitglieder von FEDEPESAN zu verhindern!

Amnesty Human Rights Award 2024: Protect environmental protection in Colombia!
What’s the problem?
The Rio Magdalena is Colombia’s largest river and the livelihood of Yuly Velásquez. For generations, the tropical river landscape in the central Colombian region of Magdalena Medio has been a source of drinking water, home to manatees and turtles, and a source of food for hundreds of fishing families. Now this life-giving ecosystem is under threat.
Yuly Velásquez is a fisherwoman and president of FEDEPESAN, a self-organized local association for traditional fishing, environmental protection and tourism in Barrancabermeja. The organization reports that fossil fuel companies are polluting the region’s water with refinery waste and oil leaks. Colombia’s largest refinery is located in Barrancabermeja, operated by Colombia’s largest oil company – but the company denies any responsibility.
The fishermen from FEDEPESAN are fighting back and have been calling on the Colombian government to protect the waters and swamps in Magdalena Medio for years: But the state stands idly by – even though Yuly Velásquez and other members are repeatedly intimidated, threatened and attacked.
Attacks on climate protection are attacks on human rights!
In the global fight against the destruction of the environment and livelihoods, the fishermen of FEDEPESAN are in the front row – they risk their lives for climate protection. In no other country do so many people have to pay for this with their lives as in Colombia.
The German section of Amnesty International is awarding the Human Rights Prize 2024 to FEDEPESAN and its president Yuly Velásquez for their fearless commitment to protecting the environment, climate and human rights.
